Our Solution
C-CORE is developing an advanced Arctic navigation support system that delivers near real-time and sea ice forecast products using satellite imagery and sea ice models. The service generates high-resolution maps of ice concentration, motion, deformation, and pressure. This provides actionable information to vessels to avoid hazardous zones and optimize routes.
The solution is delivered through C-CORE’s secure, scalable, cloud-enabled spatial data platform, which automates data ingestion, processing, visualization, and API-based integration with decision support systems.
C-CORE’s Arctic navigation support system is built on decades of research and operational experience in satellite remote sensing and ice engineering. Several ice products have already been validated through collaborations with Indigenous communities, commercial shipping companies, and defence stakeholders. The system is designed to support the Royal Canadian Navy’s Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships, Coast Guard icebreakers and commercial vessels, which will benefit from detailed ice information products thus enhancing their ability to operate safely in ice-infested waters while respecting traditional landfast ice routes used by northern communities.
This work contributes to sovereignty in the Canadian Arctic and contributes to NORAD modernization by ensuring robust navigation in ice infested waters.
